Great piece. Great connections. Really moving how you connected your personal experience with these artists. Further proof that we are all interconnected and can help heal each other.

This pairing of such thoughtful and inventive artists, along with your own engagements with the forbidden treat, was evocative. I hadn’t thought about all the implications around and symbolism of cake, especially in women’s lives. The fairytales, the connection to birthdays, birth itself, celebrations but also aging and overeating and more. Lots of layers— hee hee. Great read! as usual.

Phenomenal parallel between Simmons's birthday cake as a time marker versus Sherwood's cakes as portals. The constrast between constrained feminity and liberated heroines is super sharp. I've been thinking alot about how objects carry cultural weight beyond their function, this really nails how something as simple as cake becomes this loaded symbol.
